Isla Urbana designs, builds and installs rainwater collection systems for low-income peri-urban communities in Mexico City. They teach rainwater harvesting courses, host and participate in community events, and are dedicated to making Mexico City’s water management policy sustainable.

They do all this working household by household -- ensuring decentralized water security -- in a place known to have major water scarcity issues. There installations have been focused within the Ajusco region of Mexico City, with further expansion into the surrounding regions progressing slowly.

MAPPING STRATEGY

For families in the periphery of Mexico City, domestic water is unaffordable, unavailable, or unreliable. Isla Urbana aspires to make rainwater harvesting an accepted decentralized technology to help supply Mexico City’s household water needs. A mapping tool allows Isla Urbana to visualize their technology’s impact, calculate areas of present & future need, and target their resources effectively.
